Department of Education (DepEd) Undersecretary Alain Pascua on Thursday shared in a Facebook post the education bureau’s recommended screen time for students as they adopt blended learning, which combines the use of television, radio, printed modules, and the Internet for the delivery of education.
“Sa mga gumagamit ng Online Learning, lagi po [nating] tatandaan ang recommended screen times angkop sa bawat edad o grade level!” said Pascua in his post. “Tandaan, ang kalusugan at seguridad ng ating mga anak ay mahalaga kaya atin po itong pangalagaan!”
(“For those using online learning, let us always remember the recommended screen times suitable for each age or grade level! Remember, the health and security of our children is important so let us take care of these.”)
The suggested screen times was based on DepEd’s Memorandum 2020-00162, or “Suggested Strategies in Implementing Distance Learning Delivery Modalities for School Year 2020-2021”, which noted the following maximum screen times: one hour for Kindergarten pupils, one and a half hours for Grades 1 to 5, two hours for Grades 6 to 8, and four hours for Grades 9 to 12.
The recommended screen times were based on the guidelines of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).
