The Department of Education (DepEd) has confirmed that as of September 13, more than 30,000 schools all over the country have already finished their simulation of blended learning, in preparation for the formal opening of classes on October 5.
The number excludes schools located in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), which had already finished their own blended learning dry runs on September 13. Over 12,000 schools have yet to finish their own simulation sessions, due to disrupted school activities, lockdowns, the use of some schools as quarantine facilities, as well as the rising number of confirmed COVID-19 positive cases in regions.
DepEd earlier noted its various efforts in supporting its distance learning initiatives for the 2020-2021 school year, such as the distribution of gadgets like laptops, tablets, and connectivity tools to learners. DepEd has also prepared DepEd Commons, an online platform where teachers and students can download self-learning modules as well as video lectures for free. Learning materials such as printed modules to be distributed will also be disinfected as a way of safeguarding teachers and students.
Amid feedback of parents on their challenges transitioning to distance learning, groups have urged DepEd for an academic freeze, or the suspension of classes. DepEd has rejected such calls, as it believes such a move only disrupts the learning continuity of students.
