DepEd: Ilagan City teachers not infected due to module distribution

The Department of Education in Cagayan Valley on Thursday denied reports that the high school teachers from Ilagan City, Isabela, who tested positive for COVID-19, got infected due to their distribution of printed modules.

“The Schools Division Office (SDO) of the City of Ilagan clarifies that such unfortunate event has nothing to do whatsoever with the distribution of Self-Learning Modules (SLMs) or any materials to that effect,” remarked Estela Leon-Cariño, DepEd-Cagayan Valley Regional Director.

Cariño further noted that as per the SDO’s instruction, teachers must bring the SLMs to designated drop-off points. From there, barangay officials will retrieve the said materials and take care of distributing these to students. She also clarified that 10 and not 11 educators, contrary to earlier reports, tested positive for
coronavirus.

According to DepEd Region II, nine out of the 10 teachers got infected from one teacher who first tested negative in a rapid test but later on tested positive after a swab test. In an interview with ABS-CBN’s Teleradyo program, Isabela governor Rodito Albano III shared that the teachers tested COVID-19 positive after holding a meeting, not knowing that one of the attendees was asymptomatic with the virus. Albano has implemented a modified enhanced community quarantine in Iligan City from October 6 to 16 with a surge in cases of coronavirus.

The ten teachers are currently in quarantine at local isolation facilities.
