Filipino-Americans Achieve Major Victories in Recent U.S. Elections

MANILA — Filipino-Americans have once again made a significant impact in the recent U.S. midterm elections, not only as voters but as newly elected and re-elected public servants. Despite the challenges, Filipinos in America are strengthening their presence in the political landscape, achieving important milestones in various local and state races across the country.

Among the notable winners in this election cycle is Ysabel Jurado, a tenants’ rights lawyer and affordable housing advocate, who triumphed in the race for Los Angeles District 14 City Council. Jurado, an active champion for workers’ rights and communities struggling with housing instability, is poised to be a strong voice for affordable housing and tenant protections in Los Angeles, one of the country’s largest urban centers.

Another historic victory came from Jessica Caloza, a Filipino-American born in the Philippines, who was elected as the member-elect of the California State Assembly, 52nd District. Caloza’s win is a significant milestone for the Filipino-American community in the Golden State, where the Filipino population is one of the largest in the nation. She is committed to advancing policies that promote equity in education, healthcare, and social services, particularly for underserved communities.

“Our community is no longer just casting votes — we’re actively shaping policy and making a difference in government,” said Atty. Rodel Rodis, a prominent expert on Filipino-American issues in the U.S. “The victories of Filipino-American candidates in this election are proof that our community is gaining strength and prominence in American politics.”

In addition to the newly elected officials, several incumbent Filipino-American leaders were re-elected to positions in state legislatures and local offices, further cementing the growing political influence of the Filipino-American community. These leaders are continuing to advocate for public services, civil rights, and equal opportunities for all, particularly for marginalized groups.

“The election victories of Filipino-American leaders are not just personal achievements — they represent a victory for the entire Filipino community in the U.S. They are pushing for policies that benefit everyone, not just Filipinos,” added Rodis.

The Filipino-American presence in U.S. politics is growing rapidly, with these new leaders serving as a source of inspiration for future generations of Filipinos who aspire to public service. Their successes demonstrate that Filipino-Americans are increasingly becoming an integral part of shaping the future of the country, not only in local elections but at the state and national levels as well.

These victories in the 2024 elections underscore that the Filipino-American community is not only a vital part of the American electorate but also an influential voice in addressing key issues such as equality, social justice, and community empowerment.

The ongoing success of Filipino-American candidates in U.S. politics highlights the community’s potential to make lasting change. As more Filipinos step into leadership roles, they are ensuring that their voices are heard, and their concerns are addressed in the halls of government. This is a pivotal moment for Filipino-Americans, as their political influence continues to grow, paving the way for a more inclusive future for all.
