MANILA – President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. issued a heartfelt plea on Sunday, reminding the nation to remember the thousands of Filipinos still recovering from the devastating impact of six typhoons that struck the Philippines within a mere 23 days. As Malacañang launched its Christmas celebrations, the President’s message struck a poignant balance between festive cheer and compassionate remembrance.
Speaking at the Palace’s Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, Marcos Jr. acknowledged the ongoing hardship faced by countless families. “Let’s keep them in our thoughts and continue the Filipino tradition of helping one another,” he urged. The President emphasized that while the recent typhoons – Nika, Ofel, and Pepito among them – caused an estimated ₱478 million in damage, the spirit of Christmas remains undiminished.
“No matter the challenges, nothing can extinguish the Christmas spirit in a Filipino’s heart,” he declared. The festive atmosphere of the Palace event, complete with concerts and revelry, didn’t overshadow the President’s commitment to those in need. He highlighted his visits to evacuation centers, including those housing families displaced by a recent fire in Tondo.
“We are Filipinos. We always rise above adversity,” Marcos Jr. stated with resolute optimism. He encouraged the nation to momentarily set aside the year’s hardships and embrace the joy of family during the holiday season. “My Christmas wish?” he concluded, “That every Filipino feels the true spirit of Christmas.”
