The Department of Education (DepEd) is taking steps to strengthen the teaching profession in the Philippines. A new joint policy, signed by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC), is set to modernize teacher licensure exams to match the updated teacher education curriculum.
This policy introduces specialized licensure exams for different degree programs in teacher education. It ensures that graduates are assessed based on their specific expertise. The goal is to produce more classroom-ready professionals to improve the quality of education across the country.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. described the policy as a much-needed reform. Education Secretary Sonny Angara, who also chairs the Teacher Education Council (TEC), emphasized the importance of linking teacher training, licensure, and deployment to ensure high standards are met nationwide.
The TEC, with support from the Second Congressional Commission on Education, played a key role in creating the policy. CHED Chairman J. Prospero De Vera III and PRC Chairman Charito Zamora joined the signing ceremony at Malacañang.
This initiative is part of DepEd’s broader efforts to professionalize the teaching workforce. By equipping teachers with the right skills and aligning licensure exams with modern education standards, the goal is to provide Filipino students with better learning experiences.
