DepEd suspends Palarong Pambansa, Brigada and other crowd-drawing events

Department of Education Secretary Leonor Briones announced DepEd has decided to temporarily cancel all activities and events, particularly those that are scheduled in the coming months.

“Yong ating usual activities na napaka-exciting, nakakatuwa, na lahat, buong bansa nakikisali talaga, national events ay pansamantalang kina-cancel natin,” Briones said in a virtual press briefing.

Earlier it was announced that the school opening for School Year (SY) 2020-2021 has been moved from June to August this year.

Briones confirmed that the Palarong Pambansa (National Games) which was initially scheduled on May 1 to 9, 2020 and to be hosted by Marikina City has been canceled.

DepEd also directed the suspension of Regional Athletic Meets where the participants for the Palarong Pambansa will come from.

In a memorandum issued earlier, DepEd noted that all activities related to the “Brigada Eskwela” are temporarily suspended.

Other DepEd affairs that are indefinitely suspended include talent contests, science and job fairs, and campus journalism events, said Briones.
