In a heartbreaking turn of events, Michael “Kikil” Alcoseba, a 23-year-old student, was unable to personally accept his cum laude award during his graduation ceremony at Lapu Lapu City College. Instead, his mother and sister attended the event on his behalf and accepted the award.
Tragically, Kikil passed away on May 11 due to pneumonia, just days before the commencement exercises. He had successfully completed his Bachelor of Science in Tourism Management.
The graduation ceremony was an emotional affair, with Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Ahong Chan capturing the moment on video. Many attendees were moved to tears and gave a standing ovation as Kikil’s mother and sister received the award.
Mayor Chan expressed his own sentiments, saying, “I had goosebumps. He was taken by the Lord too early.”
Kikil’s sister, Juliet Hiyas, shared her family’s sorrow and pride in a separate post. Attending the graduation was a difficult experience for them, as Kikil’s classmates celebrated their achievement without him. Hiyas mentioned that their mother even joined the processional holding Kikil’s picture, highlighting the pain they felt.
Kikil was a dedicated student who supported himself by working while pursuing his education. He was also a member of the Lapu-Lapu City Performing Arts as a dancer.
Hiyas expressed the family’s immense pride in their “little brother.” Their hearts may be heavy, but they are still proud of Kikil’s achievements.
