Senator Robin Padilla Supports VP Sara Duterte’s Resignation, Cites Protection of Filipino Interests

MANILA, Philippines — Senator Robin Padilla believes that Vice President Sara Duterte’s resignation as the country’s education chief was a strategic move to safeguard the interests of Filipinos. On Tuesday, Padilla defended Duterte’s decision, suggesting that it was aimed at preventing potential negative impacts from the perceived rift between her family and President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

“Nakikita ko as a leader, kumbaga oops, hindi dapat maapektuhan ang interest ng Pilipino sa personal, kung meron mang hidwaan sa dalawang pamilya,” Padilla said in a statement.

Duterte stepped down from her role as Education secretary on June 19, without providing a specific reason, though she emphasized that her resignation was driven by compassion for teachers and students, not as a sign of weakness. Padilla expressed his support and understanding, stating, “Sa pagkakilala ko kay Inday, kay VP Sara, inaantay ko na ‘yan” (I know VP Sara and I was waiting for her to do that).

Padilla, who received backing from Duterte during his senatorial campaign under the UniTeam in the 2022 elections, reiterated his unwavering support for the Vice President.
