Senator Sherwin Gatchalian, head of the Senate Committee on Basic Education, has proposed Senator Sonny Angara as the ideal candidate for the position of Secretary of the Department of Education (DepEd) following Vice President Sara Duterte’s recent resignation. Gatchalian, known for his advocacy in education, highlighted Angara’s extensive experience and dedication to educational causes.
Gatchalian praised Angara’s profound understanding of educational issues and solutions, citing their collaboration in the Congressional Commission on Education (EDCOM). “He knows the problems, he knows the solutions,” Gatchalian stated, emphasizing Angara’s consistent support for education, evident during his tenure as Chairman of the Finance Committee where he allocated substantial funds for the sector.
Despite his previous reservations about politicians leading DepEd, Gatchalian believes that Angara’s track record sets him apart. Describing Angara as a public servant rather than a typical politician, Gatchalian commended his substantive discussions and commitment to public service over political interests.
Responding to speculations about his potential nomination, Angara clarified that no formal offer has been extended to him for the DepEd Secretary position.
Gatchalian emphasized the necessity for the next Secretary to have experience in managing large organizations, given the vast workforce of DepEd. While endorsing Angara for the role, Gatchalian ruled out the possibility of assuming the position himself, affirming his dedication to serving his term until 2028.
Amid the ongoing quest for the next DepEd Secretary, Gatchalian expressed confidence in Angara’s ability to swiftly adapt and effectively lead the department upon assuming the role.
