A powerful magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck Ilocos Norte in the Philippines at 2:54 a.m. on December 4, 2024, sending tremors throughout northern Luzon. The epicenter, located 4 kilometers southwest of Bangui, Ilocos Norte, was at a depth of 23 kilometers. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) warned of potential damage and aftershocks.
The quake registered Intensity V (strong) in several areas of Ilocos Norte, including Laoag City, Pagudpud, Dumalneg, Burgos, Pasuquin, Bacarra, Adams, Sarrat, and San Nicolas. This level of intensity caused strong shaking in buildings, violent swaying of hanging objects, and roused many from their sleep.
Intensity IV (moderately strong) shaking was reported in:
- Batac, Currimao, and Pinili, Ilocos Norte
- Several municipalities in Ilocos Sur (Sinait, Vigan, San Vicente, Santa Catalina, Bantay, Santa Lucia, Santa, Narvacan, San Esteban, Cabugao, San Juan, Caoayan, Magsingal, San Ildefonso, Santa Cruz, Santo Domingo, Santiago, Candon City, and Santa Maria)
- Several municipalities in Abra (Lacub, Tayum, San Juan, La Paz, San Isidro, Pidigan, Bangued, Tubo, and Bucay)
- Baguio City
- Atok and Buguias, Benguet
- Besao and Bontoc, Mountain Province
Intensity III (weak) shaking was felt in La Trinidad, Benguet.
PHIVOLCS continues to monitor the situation for any further seismic activity. Residents in affected areas are urged to remain vigilant and follow safety protocols in case of aftershocks.
