The Commission on Audit (COA) recently disclosed Vice President Sara Duterte’s earnings during her time as Education Secretary in 2023, showing a modest sum compared to her current role.
According to the COA’s 2023 Report on Salaries and Allowances (ROSA), Duterte earned a total of P558,000 for the year. This included P294,000 in allowances over 12 months and P264,000 for discretionary expenses. Notably, she didn’t receive a basic salary or honorarium for leading the Department of Education (DepEd).
This reveals a significant difference in compensation between Duterte’s previous role and her current position as vice president, where she holds Salary Grade 32, earning between P331,954 and P381,748 monthly. This places her alongside other high-ranking officials like the Senate President, Speaker of the House of Representatives, and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
In comparison, Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla topped President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s Cabinet with an income of P7.08 million in 2023, showcasing the disparities in government pay structures.
Duterte’s past earnings highlight the financial dynamics in public service, where compensation reflects position and responsibility. As she continues her role as vice president, discussions around fair compensation in government remain relevant.
