A teachers’ group appealed to the Department of Education (DepEd) on Wednesday to decide on the opening of classes for the next school year based on consultations with science and health agencies, instead of parents and educators.
The Teachers’ Dignity Coalition (TDC) in a statement said deciding on the opening of classes should not be based on surveys among parents and teachers.
The DepEd on Tuesday ended its online survey among parents and teachers on the opening of classes and other policies.
“Kinikilala namin ang hakbang ng DepEd upang kunin ang opinyon ng stakeholders nito ukol sa pagbubukas ng klase ngunit hindi survey ang dapat maging batayan nito kundi ang situwasyong pangkalusugan kaugnay ng COVID-19,” the TDC said in a statement.
“Ang mga ahensiyang pang-agham at pangkalusugan ang nasa posisyon upang magbigay ng pagtataya at rekomendasyon kung kailan ligtas nang magbukas ng klase,” it added.
A study by the a University of the Philippines Resilience Institute showed that suspension of classes until December can lessen interaction between young people that, in turn, can reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19.
Education Secretary Leonor Briones on Tuesday however said the department was leaning towards opening the next school year in August.
DepEd has assured the public that “any decision we will make for the continuation of learning” will primarily consider the health and welfare of students, and teachers.
The TDC meanwhile said it would support the DepEd’s efforts to continue the education of children despite the COVID-19 crisis.
“Gayunpaman, kung sakaling kakailanganin ang distance learning, dapat matiyak na ito’y episyente at accessible sa lahat,” it said.

Hindi po magiging safe sa lahat kung mag open ang classes habang may virus na umiiral. Ang virus ay kumakalat dhil sa paggalaw ng tao. You are going to expose children to the risk of having the virus and spreading the virus. We have to make sure the virus is controlled first before opening the school. Remember, wala pang vaccines. Right now, life is more important than education. What is one year of absence in education if you can help save lives.
A student spends the whole day in the school, with his classmates – inside a classroom. The students walks through the corridors, goes to the canteen, playground, comfort room etc. And then, after classes he rides back home through trike or jeepney — to be with his family. The next day…same routine…
Education can wait but life lost cannot be replaced so please follow the experts advice for the sake of our youth . God bless the Philippines

kaligtasan ng mga guro ng mga bata lahat ng mga naglilingkod sa paaralan at sa kumunidad..sa Covid 19 man yan o sa iba pang Virus na kumalat salamat po.
Sa aking opinion, dpat magisip ang Deped ng alternative learning kahit para sa taon na ito lamang. Kung sa august or sa dec man ang klase ng mga bata para hindi pa tapos ang virus noon. Mas marami pa din ang morbidity kesa mmortality. Salamat
Tama lang po na sa August na mag simula ang klase upang masigurado na wala ng anumang virus na kakalat at ng masigurado ang kaligtasan ng kalisugan ng mga studyante. Sana po isa alang alang din ang kalusugan ng bawat isa guro at mga mag aaral. Salamat.
