Tutorial, review centers closed in MECQ areas

Tutorial centers are among businesses told to shut down anew in areas that were placed under the stricter Modified Enhanced Community Quarantine or MECQ.

Review centers and testing centers are also not allowed to operate in MECQ areas until Aug. 18 based on the guidelines released by the Department of Trade and Industry.

“We wish that this move back to MECQ will break the increasing trend of positive COVID cases and will eventually allow us to bring back the much needed livelihood and jobs to many of our countrymen,” Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez said in a statement Monday.

Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque also reminded the public that face-to-face classes in areas under MECQ are strictly prohibited.

Areas that were placed under MECQ starting Tuesday, Aug. 4, are Metro Manila and nearby provinces Bulacan, Laguna, Cavite, and Rizal.

Tutorial centers, testing centers, and review centers however are allowed to operate at a limited capacity in areas under general community quarantine, and modified general community quarantine.

The reversion to MECQ from the general community quarantine was approved by President Rodrigo Duterte on Sunday following the call of medical frontliners for a “breathing space” as the urban hubs continue to see a rise in COVID-19 cases.

All households are encouraged to be “homeliners” during the MECQ period according to the government.
