Affordable Kadiwa Rice to Reach Millions Through Supermarket Partnership

The Department of Agriculture (DA) is partnering with major supermarket chains like SM, Robinsons, 7-Eleven, Puregold, and MerryMart to bring affordable Kadiwa rice to consumers nationwide. This initiative aims to alleviate the burden of high rice prices, particularly in Metro Manila, where prices remain elevated despite recent tariff reductions.

The program will initially launch in Metro Manila before expanding nationwide. Three varieties of Kadiwa rice will be available: P29 rice, Rice for All (5% broken), and Sulit Rice. While supermarkets will absorb additional distribution costs, the DA expects the move to significantly impact millions of consumers daily.

The Food Terminal Inc. (FTI) will manage rice supply and packaging for the participating retail chains. The DA acknowledges this is a short-term solution, as supermarket rice prices are significantly higher than those in wet markets, often exceeding P75 per kilo compared to Kadiwa’s lower prices.

However, the Philippine Amalgamated Supermarket Association (PASA) president, Steven Cua, while acknowledging the initiative’s popularity due to lower prices, cautions that the Kadiwa rice may not be of premium quality. He describes it as a “quick fix,” providing temporary relief but not a long-term solution to the issue of high rice costs. The government subsidy supporting the lower prices is also noted.
