Cebu City, Philippines – Byron John Gillana, a 24-year-old graduate of the University of San Carlos, has achieved a remarkable feat by ranking eighth in the April 2024 Electronics Engineers Licensure Examination, despite his battle with cancer. Gillana, who passed the exam with a score of 87.50%, shared his inspiring story of resilience and determination.
Diagnosed with cancer, Gillana faced a daunting challenge that threatened to derail his dreams. However, he refused to succumb to despair and remained steadfast in his pursuit of his academic goals. He credits his unwavering positivity to the unwavering support of his loved ones, who provided him with strength and encouragement.
Despite undergoing treatment and hospitalization, Gillana persevered with his studies, demonstrating remarkable dedication and commitment. He refused to let his illness define him, choosing hope as his guiding principle. He acknowledged the profound impact of his support system, stating that he “did not want to fail the people who have supported him and brightened up his perspective of life.”
Gillana’s triumph is a testament to his indomitable spirit. He graduated Cum Laude from the University of San Carlos, further solidifying his academic excellence. His achievement is even more remarkable considering the physical and emotional toll his illness took on him. He described his journey as “a man walking uphill who has to continually catch up with his breath,” highlighting the constant effort required to keep pace with his studies. He expressed gratitude for the support of his classmates and professors, who served as invaluable allies in his academic journey.
Gillana, who has been cancer-free for two years, continues to undergo regular medical checkups. He believes that his experience has taught him the importance of faith and perseverance. He stated that “even though the micro-radicals in his body tried to stop him from pursuing his goals, his journey has taught him to be as radical by keeping the faith burning — the strongest of convictions.”
