MANILA, Philippines – SM Supermalls announced the immediate dismissal of a security guard following a viral video showing him destroying the merchandise of a young sampaguita vendor outside SM Megamall. The incident, which sparked widespread outrage online, depicts the guard aggressively confronting the girl in school uniform, ripping up her flower garlands, and subsequently kicking her.
In a Facebook statement, SM Supermalls condemned the guard’s actions, expressing sympathy for the victim. The company stated that they had launched an immediate investigation and that the security guard has been terminated and will be barred from working at any SM mall.
The video, which has circulated widely on social media, shows the altercation escalating after the guard initially instructed the girl to relocate. The girl’s reaction to the destruction of her goods led to further aggression from the guard.
Netizens have overwhelmingly criticized the guard’s behavior, with many labeling his actions as child abuse. The incident has raised concerns about the treatment of street vendors and the need for improved training and oversight of security personnel in shopping malls.
