Eight teachers were among those victims who perished at the Iloilo sea tragedy that happened two days ago around noontime, when three passenger boats capsized along the Iloilo strait.
Five of the eight teachers, master’s degree students, teaches in Iloilo province. Four of them, Ma. Zeny Anilao, Lynlyn Janolino, Ivy Grace Labordo, and Maria Emilie Legarda were assigned at Lambunao National High School (LNHS) in Lambunao town. While, George Buenavista, teaches at Agcuyawan Kalsada Elementary School in Barotac Nuevo town.
The five of them traveled to Guimaras island to complete their requirements for their August 17-18 comprehensive examination.
The other three were UAE-based Filipino teachers having vacation in the country. They were recognized as Jaquelyn Alferez, Andrew Valenzuela, and Eden Perales.
The eight of them were among the 28, as of Sunday, who died in the said incident. While six remains missing and 52 were rescued.
The motorboats, Chi-chi and Keziah, capsized around noon on Saturday due to strong gust of wind. Three hours after, motorboat Jenny Vince carrying 37 passengers and four crew members, also capsized.
The Department of Education’s (DepEd) Western Visayas regional office issued a statement sending condolences to both families and communities where the five teachers served.
Office of Civil Defense (OCD) Regional Director Jose Roberto Nuñez said that the Philippine Navy boat has arrived from Cebu to augment the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) in searching for the missing passengers.
All trips between Iloilo and Guimaras were suspended.
