Public School Teacher Literally Walks The Extra Mile to Help Communities in Sorsogon

2019 CSC Dangal ng Bayan awardee and public school teacher, Michelle Rubio, showed everyone what it truly means to be a teacher adapting to the “new normal” amid protests regarding the re-opening of schools.

Teacher Michelle Goes Out

In a Facebook post, Teacher Michelle of Calao Elementary School shared how she put up a specially designed mini library to keep up with her mandate to protect and promote the right of every Filipino to quality and complete basic education.

The new mini library has laminated learning and reading materials, all of which are easy to disinfect and are available for the students to borrow.

“Bilang guro, ngayon pa lang ay gumagawa na rin ako ng mga hakbang upang matugunan ang kanilang pangangailangan… Madali lang itong i-disinfect just in case. Sisikapin po nating maging maayos at accessible sa lahat [ng mga bata] ang internet connection sa aming Barangay Mini Library,” she added.

Teacher Michelle’s Other Projects

In addition to her mini library project, she has taken it upon herself to raise awareness about COVID-19 by using mnemonics. According to her lessons, it is possible to help stop the spread of the virus by remembering S.P.O.T.S. which stands for:

  • S – Stay at home.
  • P – Pray and wear a mask.
  • O – Observe proper hand washing.
  • T – Touching your face is not allowed with your dirty hands.
  • S – Social distancing.

She also literally and figuratively went the extra mile and personally visited more than 300 children in Barangay Calao to donate food packs along with some sponsors and barangay officials. Apparently for Teacher Michelle, her job goes beyond making learning materials available to students, especially during the ongoing health crisis.

When asked why she had to check on the children while their community is under general quarantine, she said, “Gusto ko pong makatulong sa mga pamilyang masyadong naapektuhan ng lockdown. Gusto kong makita sa pamamagitan ng pagpunta sa mga bahay nila ang kanilang kalagayan at makapagbigay ng moral support at maipadama sa kanila ang pagdamay bilang kapwa tao.”

“Gusto ko ring makita at makumusta ang mga estudyante namin. Alam ko na sa pagpunta ko po sa bahay nila ay naibsan ang kanilang pangamba laban sa coronavirus,” she added.

Teacher Michelle also joined the MMJ Project Little Teachers, and had brought the Recognition ceremony and handed awards at the houses of every single one of Calao Elementary School’s top students.
