Department of Education (DepEd) Assistant Secretary Tonisito Umali recently said learners must imbibe the values of punctuality and honesty to better prepare them for their future and for the betterment of the nation.
During the recent Search for the Outstanding We Advocate Time Consciousness and Honesty (WATCH) Schools awarding at the Bulwagan ng Karunungan, DepEd Central Office in Pasig City, Umali highlighted the significance of this advocacy in inculcating the learners with proper values which promote self-respect and respect for other people’s time.
“Yung konsepto ng pagiging tama sa oras at pagiging matapat o totoo, no doubt, are basic values that we should all recognize, and that we should all instill in the minds of our youth,” Umali said.
“Kung ano ngayon ang ating ikikintal sa isipan ng mga bata, siyang magiging sila 30 taon o 40 taon mula ngayon, bilang isang abogado, doktor, inhinyero, dentista o ano pa mang propesyon nila sa hinaharap,” Umali stated.

Umali emphasized that aside from honing the learners to become better citizens of this nation, this effort also leads to the development of a stronger country.
“Ang ginagawa natin ngayon at ng mga paaralan ay hindi simpleng pagtuturo sa mga bata, tayo po ay humuhubog ng kamalayan ng mga mamamayan na siyang bubuo ng isang matatag, mahusay at magaling na bansa sa hinaharap,” Umali said.
The three best Project WATCH school implementers are Tagum City National Comprehensive High School (Division of Tagum City), Sto. Niño Elementary School (Division of Bulacan) and Cabarroguis National School of Arts and Trades (Division of Quirino).
Launched in 2008, Project WATCH aims to undertake effective programs, projects, and other activities to enhance the importance of punctuality and honesty as elements of success in our daily lives. The DepEd, Junior Chamber International (JCI) Senate Philippines, and other government and nongovernment agencies are campaigning for this initiative.
