The Manila and Quezon City local governments will be providing teachers and students with gadgets for the upcoming 2020-2021 school year.
Manila Mayor Isko Moreno announced on Friday, June 5, that their local government would be using P994 million to make available 110,000 tablets and 11,000 laptops.
The tablets will be given to public school students in the Kinder up to Grade 12 levels, while the laptops would be given to public school teachers. The tablets will each come equipped with a sim card, a monthly load of 10 gigabytes worth of data, as well as free two gigabytes for YouTube use. On the other hand, pocket WiFis would be also be loaded monthly for the public school teachers.
“Bibili tayo ng 110,000 na tablet para sa mga batang Maynila,” said Moreno. “Walang [gastos] na ang mga magulang.”
(We will purchase 110,000 tablets for Manila’s youth. Parents won’t need to spend for anything.”
“Ma’am, sir, mga teacher, ‘wag kayong mag-alala,” he added. “May laptop kayong lahat. Bibili tayo ng 11,000 para sa lahat.”
(Ma’am, sir, teachers, don’t worry. You will all be provided laptops. We will buy 11,000 [laptops] for everyone.)
Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte also shared that the city would spend its approved P2.9 billion supplemental budget to fund gadgets, modules, and Internet connectivity for its 430,000 public school students. 155,921 enrolled junior high school students and 19,819 enrolled senior high school students will receive tablets, while kindergarten and elementary school students will receive learning kits.
“We are adjusting our budget to ensure that our children will continue learning despite the sudden shift from traditional to alternative learning modalities,” said Belmonte.
The Manila and Quezon City government’s provision of gadgets and educational materials is a response to the Department of Education’s “blended learning” approach, which taps into television, radio, electronic, and online media to teach students.
The Department of Education (DepEd) announced in May that classes for the 2020-2021 school year are set to open on August 24, a decision which was approved by the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) in May. The school year is set to run from August 24, 2020, to April 30, 2021.
