Education Workers Calls for Expedited Release of Rice Allowance for Teachers

  • by

A group of education workers has called upon the Department of Education (DepEd) and the national government to accelerate the release of rice allowance to all public school teachers.

The Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) Philippines emphasized that public school teachers are entitled to receive the one-time 25-kilogram rice allowance, as mandated by Administrative Order No. 2, s. 2022, signed by President Marcos last December. However, teachers have yet to receive the allowance in most regions.

ACT Philippines has urged the DepEd and the national government to ensure that the quality of rice provided is suitable for human consumption. They have received complaints that the rice distributed in Nueva Ecija, Mindoro, and Bacolod City was inedible, while the provisions for other regions are still pending release.

The delayed release of the rice allowance has become a pressing concern for public school teachers eagerly awaiting the benefits promised to them. As frontline workers in the education sector, teachers play a vital role in building the nation’s future.

The Alliance of Concerned Teachers calls for swift action from the DepEd and the national government to address this issue. They emphasize the need for transparent and efficient distribution processes to guarantee that all public school teachers receive their rice allowance without further delay.

Furthermore, ACT Philippines stresses the importance of providing rice that is fit for human consumption, and teachers should not be subjected to receiving substandard or inedible rice. Ensuring the quality of the rice provisions is crucial for the health and well-being of teachers and their families.

Rice Allowance for Teachers

In the Philippines, the rice allowance for teachers refers to a one-time provision of rice granted by the national government to government employees, including public school teachers. This allowance aims to provide additional support to teachers and alleviate some financial burdens they may face.

As per Administrative Order No. 2, s. 2022, signed by the President of the Philippines, public school teachers are entitled to receive a one-time 25-kilogram rice allowance. The allowance is intended to assist teachers in meeting their basic needs and ensuring their well-being.

The distribution of the rice allowance is typically coordinated by the Department of Education (DepEd) and the national government. The aim is to ensure that eligible teachers receive their allocated amount of rice in a timely manner.

The specific details regarding the implementation and distribution of the rice allowance may vary, and teachers should refer to official communications from the DepEd or relevant government agencies for the most accurate and up-to-date information.

The rice allowance serves as a form of support for teachers, recognizing their essential role in shaping the country’s future and aiming to alleviate some of the financial pressures they may face in their profession.

The adequacy of a 25kg rice allowance for teachers in the Philippines is a debate and concern. While rice is a staple in Filipino households, the quantity provided may vary depending on family size and consumption patterns.

Some argue that the allowance falls short in providing sustenance for an entire month, while others believe it is valuable to support. Ultimately, the sufficiency of the allowance depends on individual circumstances.

It is important to consider the cost of living, inflation rates, and the overall financial situation of teachers when evaluating the impact and adequacy of the 25kg rice allowance.
